American Folk Art Museum

The American Folk Art Museum is the premier institution devoted to the appreciation of traditional folk art and creative expressions of contemporary self-taught artists from the United States and abroad.

We have had the pleasure to work with The Museum on over one hundred projects since 2001. While most of Krate’s work is digital, with the Museum, our work has ranged from the design and production of sidewalk banners for exhibitions to countless exhibition booklets to mail campaigns and member-related initiatives.

Sweet Paul

Sweet Paul is a lifestyle magazine for anyone looking to make simple, elegant meals and stylish crafts for the home. It was based on the blog, Sweet Paul, which The London Times ranked 22nd its Top 50 Best Design Blogs.

Krate designed the identity for the original Sweet Paul blog, and when its popularity zoomed to 200,000 hits per month, we designed the masthead of the digital magazine that it inspired. The magazine, now available in print format, has had its own runaway success and can be found at Anthropologie, Union Made, West Elm, and Barnes & Noble.

John Salibello

John Salibello is one of the premiere dealers of mid-century modern furniture and art in the country. He was in need of both a website and a complete brand overhaul that would align his visual identity with the sophistication, vastness, and variety that are the hallmark of his collection. To express these themes, we created an identity system that emphasizes scale and drama, with variety built into its applications. We designed a full set of printed collateral as well as several awnings, an etched glass sign, and a wood sign for his stores in Manhattan and the Hamptons.

With the identity in place, Krate began work on a new website tailored for architects and interior designers seeking to discover that unique, one-of-a-kind piece from his vast collection. We also built a custom content management system for his internal team to maintain the site’s inventory and content.

Alex Mill

Alex Mill is a clothing collection built around the essentials that belong in every man’s closet – the woven shirt, classic jean, and well-loved t-shirt. Each garment is thoughtfully crafted down to the last stitch to create an effortless fit and a high quality product that is built to last.

Alex Mill contracted Krate to design and develop an e-commerce website. Krate built the site on the Shopify platform, with bespoke elements throughout. The customized template gives the Alex Mill in-house team the infrastructure needed to manage product and orders, track sales, monitor consumer analytics, and grow their business.

Stitch Mountain

Stitch Mountain connects knitwear and winter sports, encouraging people to be creative both on and off the mountain by making their own winter gear. In its first year, Stitch Mountain has already gathered 30 world-class athletes who have a passion for extreme winter sports and the needlearts. The result has been a natural marriage of crafts that allows them to take their slope style to a whole new level, on and off the mountain.

Krate designed and built a site that brings together the athletes, projects, inspiration and everyone involved in the production of Stitch Mountain. The site will continue to grow as new “craftletes” are added and more projects from the forthcoming Stitch Mountain book are released.

33 East 74th Street

Krate developed the website for 33 East 74th Street, the Beyer Blinder Belle luxury 10-unit residential building, located steps from New York City’s Central Park. Working closely with the teams at Douglas Elliman and JZS Madison and in partnership with design agency Point One Percent, we tailored the user experience, creating downloadable floor plans, an interactive neighborhood map, and a custom CMS, which allows sales agents to create microsites for qualified prospects.

Go Macro News

Organic, sustainable and vegan energy bar brand, GoMacro, asked Krate to help them create a meaningful connection with their rapidly growing fan base. Seeking a solution more integrated than existing social media platforms, Krate developed and designed GoMacro News, a blog site that allows GoMacro to engage with their fan base while also educating and promoting the company’s noble ethos.

GoMacro News is a natural extension of the brand’s vibrant aesthetic. Krate developed a responsive template that works seamlessly across mobile, tablet and desktop platforms. With a backend built on WordPress, the GoMacro marketing team now has the tools they need to efficiently update their fans and followers with company news, healthful tips and ingredient features.

Aether Apparel

Aether Apparel designs modern, sophisticated outerwear constructed from some of the most technologically advanced fabrics.

Krate kept the Aether customer in mind as we re-tooled and built the entire site, from product availability reminders, currency converters and language switching, new product sections and visuals, a new blog, and more. And on the backend, an entire new CMS was put in place with new content tools and reporting options for the Aether staff to manage all of the details on the site. We teamed up with designer Nina Masuda and Aether’s in-house team for the design, while our good friends at Carbone Smolan Agency did the branding.

Lunar Sea Creative

Lunar Sea Creative is a communications consultancy that helps companies deliver compelling events and presentations, through planning, speechwriting, media production and other creative services.

We designed a simple but engaging business card site for Lunar Sea Creative. The content was minimal – text and a couple of images, so we created a typographic scrolling website with some little twists in the design to create delight.

Studio Sumo

Studio Sumo is an academic and architecture partnership focused on innovative design, exploration, and research. The firm’s principals are faculty at Columbia and Yale, and their projects span includes residential, institutional, exhibition, and installation work for groups like the Museum for African Art, Josai School of Management, and MoCADA.

After initial creative meetings with Sumo, Krate began the redesign, first developing an infinite, flexible grid system for the site’s opening. We then expanded the horizontal scheme across other sections of the site. This site is powered by Krate’s content management system, which allows Studio Sumo to manage their portfolio, work, and CV.

The New Inquiry

The New Inquiry states they are “a space for discussion that aspires to enrich cultural and public life by putting all available resources—both digital and material—toward the promotion and exploration of ideas.” In a 2011 profile of the nascent group, the New York Times called them “New York’s Literary Cubs.” Regardless of labels, TNI has gathered some of the brightest writers, bloggers and literary critics under one roof for the relaunch of thenewinquiry.com.

Krate worked closely with the TNI team to develop a new website that would meet the needs of a growing staff, aggregate multiple blogs and columns, and provide a gateway for readers to subscribe to their magazine. Media artist Imp Kerr created the design. The CMS features a tailored backend with workflow management tools, custom margin notes for posts, and integration with Amazon Payments for online subscriptions. Since the launch, TNI’s popularity has soared, and with an ever-longer list of contributors publishing content regularly, and their social media feeds communicating with over 15,000 users daily.

Washington Square Park Conservancy

The Washington Square Park Conservancy is a not for profit organization that works with the New York City Parks Department and neighborhood groups to ensure that NYC’s iconic Washington Square Park continues as a diverse and historical urban green space.

Krate worked with the design team at Doyle Partners and WSPC staff to develop a website that was clear, easy to use, and simple to manage. A branded homepage experience echoes the new graphic identity for the park, while customized Google maps help visitors find the park’s main attractions. The new website will be the go-to resource for events, gatherings, and news for the park.

Gabrielle Revere

Celebrity and fashion photographer Gabrielle Revere shoots for clients like Sony Music, Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine and Life. She has had a solo exhibition of her work at galleries like Sotheby’s and has become a media personality, judging on the show “America’s Next Top Model.”

Gabrielle is a long-standing Krate client, and we are one of her biggest fans. In our ongoing partnership, our projects have ranged from web to exhibition materials. We designed her extensive portfolio website, and have continued to maintain it since. Offline, we’ve kept Gabrielle’s brand consistent across promotional materials and exhibition graphics.

Foundation for Self-Taught Artists

The Foundation for Self-Taught Artists (START) promotes information and scholarly research on self-taught artists. They foster public understanding and appreciation of self-taught artists and their work through their website, documentary film, social media, educational events, and academic partnerships.

Krate redesigned both the identity and website for the Foundation. One of the primary goals of the new site was to bring a richer catalog of artist work online. A new gallery was created and launched with over 400 works, with more coming online every day. Their previously separate blog was integrated, a new content management system was established, and online donation tools added
